【Golf】Torque-less for around 40,000 yen!? A Japanese-made milled torque-less putter aimed straight at the target

Even though you intended to hit along the line you aimed with the putter, it just glides right past the hole... we’ve all had that experience at least once as golfers. The "PERFECT STROKE ST-01" is designed with a torque-less concept to suppress the rotation of the putter face before attempting to correct your stroke. Moreover, its secret is said to lie in the large "M shape" that is visually recognizable.

This M shape has meaning

What first catches the eye is the boldly cut M-shaped structure at the rear of the head. It looks quite prominent, so one might think it's for design, but its purpose is weight distribution. By削り away unnecessary parts and leaving weight where it's needed, it suppresses the movement of the face trying to rotate upon impact. In other words, this M shape itself is "function."

When it comes to torque-less putters, some may picture a unique shape, but the ST-01 has a familiar mallet style when set up. While it can be shot normally, its insides are anything but ordinary. With this level of difference, even those who have used mallets until now might be able to approach it without discomfort.

The secret of the front-heavy design

The primary aim of ST-01 is its four weights. On the face side, there are two 11g weights, totaling 22g. On the rear side, there are two 4g weights, totaling 8g. In other words, the front side has approximately 2.75 times the weight of the rear side. While many typical mallets have a design that places weight toward the back, the ST-01 rather emphasizes the face side.

Additionally, it combines a lightweight aluminum body with a high-density stainless steel milled face. It reduces weight in certain areas while adding weight in others. Rather than simply making the head heavier, it shifts the weight forward to help stabilize the rotation of the face. With 22g and 8g, looking at these numbers gives insight into what the ST-01 aims to achieve as a putter.

Formed by cutting from solid wood.

The head's aluminum body is machined from a solid block using CNC. Unlike casting with die-casting, it is carefully machined from solid aluminum, which results in high precision in reproducing the desired shape and sufficient strength, showcasing the advantage of machining. The surface retains machining marks from an end mill as part of the design, and both colors, black and gunmetal, feature an anodized finish.

Furthermore, the shaft uses the "KBS CT TOUR PUTTER 120" weighing approximately 120g, and the grip is the "SuperStroke Zenergy XL Tour 2.0+Plus TLT," designed for zero torque putters. It's not just the head that is torque-free; the shaft and grip are also securely held. As a single putter, everything converges towards one vector.

1 to 2 meters of "just need to sink it" is guaranteed.

Drive comfortably and approach the green with your irons. And what's left is 1 to 2 meters. When you think, "I just need to sink it," this distance can somehow appear oddly long. The ST-01 is designed to make it easier to align the face with the white alignment line on the top line, and through its M-shaped structure, forward weighting, and weight distribution using different materials, it aims to suppress face rotation.

Of course, just changing your putter won't automatically make the ball go in. However, instead of simply doubting your stroke, try to reduce the wobble from the equipment side. After getting your hands on the ST-01, which took about two years of design and prototyping, let’s sink the ball in one shot with your own skills and make a small fist pump.
