"Three-hour drive from the city center: Explore the popular roadside station 'Kawaba Denen Plaza' and the Tone Numata Nostalgic Line."

Sometimes, I want to take a relaxing drive on a road that stretches through an open rural landscape in my beloved car and enjoy local gourmet food. This time, I drove to the popular roadside station "Kawaba Denen Plaza" in Kawaba Village, Tone District, Gunma Prefecture, and aimed for the tranquil scenery of the "Tone Numano Bkyou Line."

The roadside station "Kawaba Dene Plaza" located in Kawaba Village, Tone District, Gunma Prefecture

I came to Kawaba Village in Gunma Prefecture aiming for a drive spot that can be reached in three hours by expressway from Tokyo. Kawaba Village is situated at the foot of Mount Hoshun, which is one of Japan's famous hundred mountains, and it is a place characterized by agricultural products that utilize the clear stream's water. I am looking forward to the experiences that await me this time.
The roadside station Kawaba Dene Plaza, one of the destinations this time, is certified by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as one of the "National Model Roadside Stations," possessing excellent functions as a hub for regional revitalization. It has also received high ratings on Google Maps, so I came to see what attractions it truly holds.
The spacious grounds feature various shops, as well as waterside areas, parks, and plenty of seating, creating a very fulfilling impression. I felt that the crisp breeze flowing through the premises was refreshing, and being able to spend time comfortably was also one of its attractions.
One frequently mentioned item in online information was the grilled meat called "Sanzoku-yaki" from the "Meat Workshop." I had planned to eat a grilled platter of ham and sausages on site, but due to timing issues, I ended up purchasing takeout items instead.
I tried baking it at home, but the flavor crafted by the workshop head who trained in the authentic Germany is exceptional. The use of local materials, such as the water from Kawaba village and cherry chips for smoking, adds charm that is unique to the area.
Additionally, I bought blueberry drinking yogurt at the farmers' market. While enjoying the scenery of the premises, I tasted it at a terrace seat, and the blueberries were fresh and fragrant, showcasing the flavors unique to the production area. The drinking yogurt, processed naturally without additives, had a richness that paired well with the blueberries.

A driving route with rural landscapes: Tone Numata Bōkyō Line

The next destination is the driving course called "Tone Numata Bōkyō Line." The Tone Numata Bōkyō Line connects Minakami Town through Kawaba Village to Mount Akagi, featuring moderate ups and downs, with viewpoints overlooking vast farmlands and towns along the way. As I drive comfortably, I can enjoy the tranquil rural scenery that is usually not seen.
After passing through the rural area, a mountain road surrounded by lush trees begins. It seems to be a deep natural setting where you can spot large birds of prey and badger-like animals. Near the top of the pass, there is a viewpoint, and we decided to get out of the car to take a look.
Although the view was not clear due to fog, it offered a sweeping view of Mount Akagi and the town at its foot. The lack of traffic signals made for a pleasant drive, and the variety of scenery was an attractive driving route.
This time, we will take the Tone Numata Bōkyō Line and Route 251, heading towards the summit of Mount Akagi. If you are headed to Mount Akagi from Tokyo, this route is rarely followed, so I want to fully enjoy it.
Route 251, which leads to the summit of Mount Akagi, is a mountain road with moderate ups and downs and winding curves, with tire marks visible at every corner. The trees are thick, and the cool air of the highlands flows in; it's very pleasant to drive with the windows open.
We climbed the mountain road and arrived at Lake Onuma at the top of Mount Akagi. What I felt while driving this route is that it can be easily enjoyed as a three-hour drive from Tokyo, fully experiencing the charm of Kawaba Village. Also, when I get tired of writing, I want to drive out to enjoy the peaceful scenery.
