Three methods to chill beer! What I tried to quickly get it ice-cold at home

Beer tastes best when it’s ice-cold! So this time, I challenged myself to find three methods to quickly chill beer that had warmed up by the time I got home after buying it.

I want to chill my beer right away! It’s a muggy 24 degrees indoors, and I’m testing for 10 minutes.

The hot and humid days continue. On days like this, what I want to drink is beer. Especially if it's ice-cold beer, it becomes an exquisite moment.

Today, I bought some with the determination of saying, "I'm going to drink beer when I get home!" but by the time I arrived home, it was already lukewarm. I don't want to put it in the fridge and wait for it to cool down.

So this time, I will try three methods to chill beer quickly. To check which method chills the fastest, I will set a timer for 10 minutes for each.

① A little tricky! Method of wrapping with kitchen paper and throwing it in the freezer

The first method to try is to wrap wet kitchen paper around the beer and put it in the freezer. Many of you may have thrown it into the colder freezer when you wanted to drink beer quickly. This method not only puts it in the freezer but also enhances the cooling speed due to the effect of evaporative cooling.

・Wet kitchen paper
What you need to be careful about when cooling in the freezer is that the volume increases when it freezes, which poses a risk of bursting. Please be careful not to freeze it, aiming for no more than 10 minutes. It's not much effort, but it requires a bit of attention.
Now, let's check the results you’re curious about. The beer temperature after 10 minutes is 14.4 degrees. Since the temperature before cooling was 24.3 degrees, it has dropped by about 10 degrees. Unfortunately, it's still not at the best drinking temperature yet.

② A method that requires little effort: just put it in ice water and leave it

Next, we will check the method of putting beer in ice water. Since it can be cooled with easily obtainable items like ice and water, it seems practical for everyday use.

・Ice water...1L
After leaving it for 10 minutes, the beer temperature dropped to 10.8 degrees. Can it really drop by 14 degrees in such a short time! I was able to feel the cooling effect more than I expected. The coldness of the can that I felt the moment I held it was definitely different from ①. It can be left as it is, so the balance between effort and cooling might be good.

③ The fastest and most reliable method to cool! Adding salt to ice water and rotating it

Finally, I checked by adding salt to the ice water. To make a fair comparison with ②, the amount of water and ice is the same. After stirring well and dissolving the salt, I tried adding the beer.

・Salt…2 tablespoons
Furthermore, rotating it can increase the contact area between the beer and the ice water, thus enhancing the cooling effect. It takes a bit more effort, but this is for those who are willing to put in the effort to enjoy their beer.
The temperature of concern is 9.5 degrees. The ice water with salt has lowered the temperature by 1 degree. Although it’s only 1 degree, for beer lovers, this 1 degree is significant. I actually tried drinking it afterward, and indeed, it was ice-cold. Whoa! It was worth the effort to keep it rotating.

On a later date, when I increased the amount of ice and re-tested, the temperature dropped to 7 degrees this time. The official Sapporo Beer website recommends a drinking temperature of 4 to 8 degrees, so this temperature can be considered the best.
Of course, it can also be used with other alcoholic beverages or canned juices. There’s no doubt that it will come in handy not only when you suddenly crave beer, but also during unexpected guests.
