【Top 3 in Machida】 Local Residents' Go-To Store! A Tasting Report with Recommendations from Popular Wagashi Shops

Machida, a city that offers both good access to the city center and a lush natural environment. In such a place, a variety of beloved wagashi shops exist, all at a high level. This time, I’ve carefully selected recommended traditional wagashi shops as someone who was born and raised in Machida.

【Wagashi Miyoshido】 "Black Rice Daifuku"

The first stop was "Wagashi Miyoshido," located a 5-minute walk from Machida Station on the JR Yokohama Line. With a nostalgic atmosphere that evokes history, I couldn't wait to see what kind of wagashi awaited me in a shop like this. Upon entering the store, perhaps due to it being just 10 minutes after opening, a variety of wagashi was displayed.
This time, I chose the "Black Rice Daifuku," which the staff recommended. When we think of daifuku, we often envision a white one, but this one is made with black rice. Indeed, the skin is black. What surprised me even more was the price. It's only 90 yen! Even with the rising prices, getting change from 100 yen is impressive!
The moment I took a bite, I decided that I would definitely buy it again tomorrow. The daifuku skin is moist and chewy. The rich red bean paste inside has a refined sweetness. This pairs perfectly with Japanese tea! It seems that using black rice doesn’t drastically change the taste of the daifuku, but it was definitely to my liking as a sweet tooth.

【Kaho Nakano-ya】 Enjoy the Natural Flavor of Ingredients with "Kusa Mochi"

Next, I visited "Kaho Nakano-ya," a shop where I've enjoyed sweets since childhood, growing up in Machida. I vividly remember buying wagashi with my mother when there were home visits. All the wagashi here are delicious. The shop is open until 8 PM, which is great for stopping by after work.

Nakano-ya was established in 1933, boasting over 90 years of history and always bustling with customers of various ages. With over 20 different products available, I often find myself unsure of what to choose, but I decided to ask for recommendations this time!
The staff introduced "Kusa Mochi (140 yen)," saying, "This is popular and delicious!" My grandfather loved this and often bought it, but I don't think I've tried it myself... I bought both the red bean paste and chunky bean paste versions. The package even had a "red bean paste" sticker, which I appreciated as a thoughtful touch.
Upon taking a bite, the aroma of mugwort wafted through. Coupled with the pleasant weather, I could fully feel the essence of spring. Memories of my grandfather surfaced, bringing warmth to my heart. Compared to the "Black Rice Daifuku" from Miyoshido, this was subtler in sweetness. The natural flavors and aromas of the ingredients were highlighted, allowing me to enjoy a sophisticated taste. Indeed, everything from Nakano-ya is delicious!

【 Tachibana】

Finally, I would like to introduce "Tachibana," located along the main road. Unlike the previous two shops, it's a bit farther from Machida Station but has parking available, making it easy to stop by during a drive. In addition to wagashi and dango, they also offer various types of rolled sushi. A friend of mine loves their sushi and visits at least once a week.
When I asked, "What are your popular products?" just like at the previous two shops, the staff sadly replied, "The most popular item just ran out..." Although I was looking forward to it, they recommended "Uguisu Mochi (150 yen)" and "Hana Mochi (170 yen)" instead, saying they are also good. Both have a festive appearance and are spring-like.
Feeling warmed by the staff's kind service, I took a bite of Hana Mochi. Wow! This also has a punchy sweetness that is irresistible to sweet lovers. The quality sugar melts away the fog in my pollen-weary mind. The Uguisu Mochi offers a wonderful harmony between the aroma of red bean paste and the savory flavor of uguisu powder, making it deliciously addictive. The powder does get a bit messy, but that hardly matters. Both have a delightful chewy texture from the mochi!

Is there a connection to its history as a relay station on the Silk Road?
