【Tasting】The author, a Jimny driver and spice curry enthusiast, tried Suzuki's retort curry

I came across information that Suzuki, the automobile manufacturer, has released retort curry, so I decided to check it out. Apparently, it is authentic Indian curry and can be purchased online, so I immediately placed an order.

The reason Suzuki sold retort curry

At Suzuki's headquarters in Hamamatsu, which has a lot of foreign personnel, including employees from India, it seems that authentic Indian curry is served in the cafeteria. It is so well-received that it is referred to as "mother's taste" by them, and due to its flavor and high quality, development for commercialization progressed, leading to its sale as retort curry on June 25, 2025.

This retort curry is a vegetarian menu that does not use dairy products or animal materials, achieving a finishing touch that is hard to taste at home. Expectations are rising.

I purchased the chickpea masala with Jimny's box art

There are four flavor variations, each matched with a representative Suzuki vehicle: "HAYABUSA (Daikon Sambar flavor)", "Swift (Tomato Lentil Dal flavor)", "Jimny (Chickpea Masala flavor)", and "V-STROM1050DE (Green Leaf Mung Dal flavor)" printed on the packaging.

As a Jimny owner, I chose the chickpea masala flavor from the Jimny package.

I tried cooking it and eating it in the cargo area of the Jimny.

Retort food can be enjoyed outdoors as well. I decided to try cooking (heating) it in the back of my Jimny, assuming a car camping situation.
The appearance and texture have a similar vibe to meat sauce. It features a moderate acidity and a slightly stronger spiciness, which is a taste I personally enjoy. The flavor of the spices is strong, with chickpeas providing a sense of volume in place of meat, creating a well-balanced taste. This is a very high-quality finish. If I have the opportunity, I would love to try the freshly made curry at the company cafeteria.
The back of the package has illustrations, and when you line up four of them, they combine to form one picture. It reminds me of when I used to line up the spines of Dragon Ball manga volumes when I was a child.
The price of "Jimny (Brown Chickpea Masala Flavor)" is 918 yen. With shipping added, it becomes 1,688 yen, which is quite expensive for retort curry. However, it seems difficult to obtain outside of the Suzuki History Museum and Suzuki event venues, so if you are a Suzuki fan, it would be worth trying at least once. Why not taste the authentic curry made by the automobile manufacturer Suzuki?
