Recreating the Meatball Pasta from "Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro" with meatballs supervised by Capricciosa
Reproducing the "Meatball Pasta" seen in the animated film "Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro." During a work break in the afternoon, I tried out a recipe that popped into my head.
"Recreation of the specialty from the work: 'Capricciosa supervised tomato and garlic Italian-style meatballs'"
While shopping at the supermarket, I came across the "Capricciosa Supervised Tomato and Garlic Italian-Style Meatballs" (299 yen) and had a sudden inspiration. Could this help me recreate the spaghetti and meatballs that Lupin and Jigen were fighting over in "Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro"?
In fact, this meatball pasta seems to be etched in the memory of many viewers, as numerous recreations and content related to it have been produced over the years. So, I decided to give it a try myself.
The ingredients (quantities omitted) are as follows:
- Pasta
- Capricciosa Supervised Tomato and Garlic Italian-Style Meatballs
- Del Monte Basic Ripe Tomato Sauce
- Italian Parsley
- Grated Cheese
- Garlic Paste
- Olive Oil
The star of the show, the meatballs, are said to be flavored based on the popular menu item "Tomato and Garlic Pasta" from the well-known Italian restaurant chain Capricciosa. Since the pairing with pasta is undoubtedly a good match, by adding just a few ingredients to these meatballs, it should be easy to recreate a pasta dish in the story that would satisfy many fans.
Balance with Del Monte's "Basic Ripe Tomato Sauce."
The meatballs come in a microwaveable package, but I warmed them up using the hot water bath method. When I tasted the sauce, it really felt like the tomato sauce from Capricciosa, and it was very delicious. However, as I instinctively felt when I picked up this package, it seems like there isn't enough tomato sauce for pasta.
So, I added my usual go-to Del Monte "Basic Ripe Tomato Sauce" (259 yen). It's a garlic-infused tomato sauce that can be used as is, so I often use it for tomato-based pasta dishes. I plan to use this to bulk up the sauce and achieve a better balance for the pasta sauce.
The amount of garlic in the meatball sauce from Capricciosa seemed to be quite high, so I added a small amount of olive oil and garlic paste to Del Monte's tomato sauce, enhancing the tomato sauce with a garlic flavor. I then added heat to balance it out.
I added the meatball sauce and boiled pasta, and then just tossed the pan. The atmosphere was perfect, and the saltiness both sauces combined seemed just right. It was almost finished just by heating it up.
The appearance is perfect! How about the taste of the meatball pasta?
To further enhance the look and flavor, I sprinkled chopped Italian parsley and grated cheese to finish! The appearance is exactly as I imagined in my mind and perfect. It looks incredibly delicious.
The moderate acidity and garlic flavor cling to the pasta and are very tasty. Since the seasoning relies on store-bought sauce, it doesn't take much effort and the balance feels just right. Perhaps minced garlic could have worked better to enhance the garlic flavor even more.
The meatballs seem to be made from chicken and had a flavor close to the familiar meatballs in our lunch boxes. Italian meatballs are typically made from beef or pork, which may be a bit lacking for those seeking authenticity. However, this meatball definitely has a taste familiar to Japanese people, so there's no doubt it's delicious.
Upgrade your diet with your usual supermarket
By the way, if you are looking for more consistency, there is spaghetti sauce sold by Capricciosa, so using that might give you an even more cohesive flavor. Also, adding a ketchup flavor to take it towards Neapolitan style could be interesting, as it seems like something kids would enjoy. This recipe seems to have plenty of room for exploration.
Recreating it from scratch is fun, but it's also easy and enjoyable to arrange store-bought meatballs and sauces. I was reminded that the supermarket I always use has products that can upgrade my diet. Anime fans and Capricciosa fans, please refer to this article and enjoy recreating the menu.
